About Us

Grover Wilhelmsen, Executive Director

Grover Wilhelmsen is a former orchestra teacher, conductor, performer and business owner of Classical Strings who has been involved in the music business for over 50 years.

Since 1987, Grover’s Classical Strings shop has provided instrument sales, restoration, and rentals for violins, violas, basses, cellos, and folk instruments.

In between repairing and tuning up every issue a string instrument can face, Grover also helps people discover the joy of music and the importance of a good instrument. Many musicians can trace their introduction to and love of music to the shop at Classical Strings, due in large part to Grover’s personal care and time.

He sees the need for cultural arts on a community level and has worked for decades to promote and support the arts.

Grover helped develop the Northern Utah Youth Symphony over 25 years ago, and thinks it’s time to do the same with a community orchestra here for musicians to use their talents and skills after high school and throughout adulthood.

Grover knows music brings balance, meaning and purpose to life. Come join him in this great adventure.

Nathan West, Conductor

Nathan West started violin as a Suzuki student at age 6. At 10 he won first place in a regional annual scholarship competition, which funded additional private lessons. He studied with teachers in Idaho and Utah, including Diane Austin, Janet Snyder, and Karen Child. He was also a prominent voice in high school choirs, serving as choir president his senior year under the direction of Terry Hagerman.

After serving a mission for his church, he attended Brigham Young University-Idaho studying with Ted Ashton. He was concert master of the BYU-I symphony orchestra and Chamber orchestra, and was a regular participant in the Baroque Ensemble with Dr. Robert Tueller. He graduated from BYU-I with a Bachelor of Music Arts, String Emphasis and the University of Utah with a Master of Music, Violin performance degree. He supplemented his studies at the U with pursuit of a new interest, orchestral conducting, under the direction of Dr. Robert Baldwin.

Nathan’s motivation is performing. He has always enjoyed entertaining people of any age or culture with music and showmanship. He has sung in Carnegie Hall and performed in orchestras and solo recitals around the Midwest and several times in Europe.

Nathan has found great joy, strength, and assurance in classical music, and he now enjoys teaching the history, skills, musicianship and performance practice to a new generation of musicians both in private lessons, and as the orchestra teacher at Promontory Charter School.
